概要 : Thermonuclear X-ray bursts, observed from neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), originate due to intermittent unstable thermonuclear burning of accreted matter accumulated on the stellar surfaces. When such a burning is azimuthally asymmetric on a spinning neutron star, variation of X-ray flux with frequencies close to the stellar spin frequency can be observed. Such a variation, known as burst oscillation, can be very useful to probe thermonuclear flame spreading on neutron stars, as well as to measure stellar parameters, for example, mass and radius. These measurements will be helpful to study a fundamental problem of physics, that is understanding the superdense degenerate matter in neutron star cores. I will briefly describe burst oscillations, and will discuss how a future X-ray space mission, such as LOFT, will be useful to measure neutron star mass and radius.
