Date: 15th October (Mon), 13:30- Place: room 248, Main research building Lecturer: Dr. Bjarke Gudnason (Racah Institute of Physics, Israel) Seminar title: High Q monopoles and dwarf galaxy sized solitonic dark matter Abstract: This talk is concerned with 't Hooft-Polyakov monopoles in the limit of large charge Q (corresponding to a large number of monopoles close together) and an application thereof to a model for dark matter halos. It has been known for a long time that monopoles of charge Q>1 cannot be exactly spherically symmetric. However, in the BPS limit, the shape of the high Q monopoles can take any form and thus also a nearly spherically solution must exist. We quantify this statement with an approximate solution. For the non-BPS case the energy density of the monopoles has the right radial fall off for providing flat rotational curves in (dwarf) galaxies. Furthermore, the conjectured toy model addresses the missing satellite problem as well as the cusp problem which are typically present in Lambda-CDM. We discuss some theoretical problems of the non-BPS high Q monopoles.
