Code of Conduct

Behave professionally at all times (scientific sessions, social events etc.). Treat all participants equally regardless of their gender, race, seniority, or other individual traits.

  • Do: Treat fellow participants with respect and dignity as professional scientists.
    • Don't: Treat fellow participants as potential romantic partners or comment on their relationship status (Asking "Are you single?" ...).
    • Do: Be friendly and welcoming while having casual discussions, while also keeping an appropriate distance (e.g., refrain from making comments or telling stories about other participants and do not tell inappropriate jokes or anecdotes).

  • Do: Engage in scientific discussions with fellow participants.
    • Don't: Bring up other people's appearance (gender, race, weight...) including pregnancy status (Asking "Are you pregnant?", "When are you planning to have kids?"...) in conversation.
    • Do: Encourage fellow participants and help them to pursue their research goals by giving them feedback and criticism related to their work on scientific grounds without being dismissive (in particular towards less experienced scientists).

  • Do: Ask scientifically relevant questions in a respectful manner to fellow participants.
    • Don't: Interrupt participants repeatedly during talks or with questions unrelated to the topic at hand during discussion sessions (Would you ask that same question to a senior male professor? ...).
    • Do: Be mindful of the share of the conversation / question session you are using (Can your question reasonably be answered during the talk or is it better in a discussion session?  Have you already asked many questions?  Led the conversation for a long time? ...), and leave space for others to contribute.

In short, please contribute to a respectful scientific environment, which cannot include harassment or discrimination of any kind. If an issue arises, please contact either in person or via email

  • Any one of the event organizers, Derek Inman (derek.inman@riken.jp), Amaury Micheli (amaury.micheli@riken.jp), Ryo Namba(ryo.namba@riken.jp); or
