Description
After 25 years, the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) ceased operation on February 6, 2026. Over the next 10 years, RHIC will be reconfigured as the Electron Ion Collider (EIC). The collisions of polarized beams were a major component of the RHIC program and will also play a key role in the operation of the EIC.
Polarimeter targets facilitate polarized beam operation by measuring the beam polarization at specific locations in the ac-celerator chain. The Coulomb Nuclear Interference (CNI) polarimeter in RHIC uses carbon polarimeter targets that have dimensions of 25mm x 10μm x 50nm. The carbon polarimeter targets in the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron (AGS) are 50mm long and 25nm thick and widths of either 50μm, 75μm and 125μm. The techniques used to produce these targets have evolved over the last 25 years and the improvements will be discussed. In addition, the requirements for the EIC polarimeters targets will be presented.
